So who is Karen?

I began my adventure with Tomboy Tools in November 2007. I had been looking for a flexible, home-based business that would make some extra money while fulfilling a desire to do something interesting that was just for me. My family was at a point where they could manage without me if I was working on my business, and it would be a good example for my boys to see my dedication, ingenuity, and commitment to customer service.

In my search for a suitable business, I stumbled upon the Tomboy Tools website and couldn't believe my eyes. I'm a pretty resourceful person, have been blessed with opportunities during my life to learn how to do things for myself, and love to learn about how things work. I love the smell of wood and the satisfaction of fixing something, myself. So the idea of a business with tools designed for women, and the chance to help others find joy in the same things as me.... a dream come true. Without seeing a single tool, I signed up as Home Consultant #B0131.

I waited with great anticipation for my Starter Kit to arrive (didn't take long but it seemed forever). I was determined to make this work, and while I was satisfied with the results of my research into Tomboy Tools Canada, I was curious about the tools (I had only seen the website pictures!). The day the big box arrived, hubbie joined me to watch as I opened it up & spread everything out over the living room floor.

Here's the stunning part: I ducked out to fetch my old toolbox I'd bought about 20 years earlier when we started fixing up the first house we lived in. I parked it next to the brand new Tomboy Tools yellow Super Stepper, and got goose bumps. The two were identical! Of course, my old one had a different name stamped on it, and showed remnants of projects of the past... but it still was fully functional. This was my "sign" of great things to come. I stand behind my own testimonial - started YEARS before the idea of Tomboy Tools was even conceived - on one of our biggest products.

With each tool we examined, our delight with the design and features increased. It was like Christmas morning for me. At one point, hubbie sat on the sofa, flipping through the Guide to Home Improvements book, he looked at me and said, "You know, I think you're on to a good thing." That meant a lot coming from a guy that's done construction stuff all his life and been running his own successful business building and installing custom millwork and kitchens for the past 20 years.

Little did I know that becoming an entrepreneur, business owner, and supporter of other women, would teach me so much! My Tomboy Tools business has reminded me how happy it makes me when I help others help themselves. When sharing really well designed home improvement tools and how to use them, I see women light up and gain the confidence to stride forward with changing their environment to one they enjoy more. It's so cool.

My first year was quite an adventure. Having signed up directly with head office, I didn't have a local sponsor to coach me. I spent months of trial and error to learn good ways of running my business and finding & serving my customers. This is one reason I'm so passionate about coaching new Tomboys. I refuse to have anyone else lose that much time getting their business up and running. Having teammates is fantastic for support!

Now I'm learning to work even more efficiently, finding my ideal clients, and growing my team with the best Tomboys I can find. I want all women to have the opportunity to discover our amazing tools and how fun & useful our events are. Once these tools are in your hands, you'll "get" what it's all about.
